Department of Chemistry, Physics, and Atmospheric Sciences – CHEMISTRY
College of Science, Engineering, and Technology

Chemistry is the study of how matter behaves at its most basic level. The central science, chemistry, is involved in everything that we do. Its applications stretch across all areas of life, including medicine, engineering and agriculture.

The Premier Chemistry Program

Discover one of the nation’s top Chemistry Programs, recognized for producing exceptional graduates. Our program ranks 3rd in Bachelor’s, 2nd in Master’s, and 3rd in Doctoral degrees in Physical Sciences (mainly chemistry) awarded to African Americans.

With a team of 20 outstanding and diverse faculty members, our program offers BS, MS, and PhD degree programs. Our BS degree program has been certified by the American Chemical Society since 1973, offering various career paths including biomedical science, environmental science, forensic science, pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-pharmacy, and pre-engineering. Graduates of our programs receive excellent preparation for graduate and professional schools, as well as careers in industry, academia, and government. In fact, 72% of our BS/MS graduates pursue advanced degrees within one year of graduation.

We are dedicated to building the country’s premier PhD program, fostering a culture and environment conducive to underrepresented minorities. Our program emphasizes challenging curricula, a nurturing environment, training in chemistry teaching, research, research publication, and proposal writing, preparing doctoral graduates for careers as university professors. Our faculty members are prolific researchers, averaging 7 papers per faculty per year, and our department consistently ranks among the top chemistry departments in the country.

We offer various training programs providing scholarships, fellowships, and internships for our students. For further information, please contact the Department office at 601-979-2171.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The chemistry program involves a deep study of matter and its properties.
In your classrooms and labs, you will synthesize, analyze and test substances to gain understanding of how and why they combine or separate to form other substances, as well as how they interact with energy. You will also have opportunities to work with faculty on real-world research and gain field experience for pay or academic credit.

LEARN BY DOING

From your first day on campus, you will learn to be a scientist by BEING a scientist and work your way up to developing and testing your own hypotheses. You will create new substances, test theories using chemical analysis, create processes to make unstable molecules more stable, and more. At Jackson State University, you will become a part of the process of creating new scientific knowledge.

“Challenging Minds, Changing Lives.”

APPLY YOUR KNOWLEDGE

Your time will be spent collecting and analyzing data or running experiments on state-of-the-art equipment – not solely sitting at desks.
